In this guide you will learn that before the Second World War the resort centre of the Curonian
Spit was Juodkrantė, famous for its splendid villas, while Nida was a place where artists sought
peace and quiet, and where the glider pilots, known as the 'romantics of the air and the wind',
flew their gliders from the dunes. You will discover that the majority of the existing holiday
homes were built in the Soviet era, when pure modernist architecture was replaced by more
regionalist architecture, and that remarkably, little has been built since Lithuania regained its
independence in 1990.
